FLaG Work in Progress Workshop

Date

We are delighted to restart our work in progress workshops on 31st March 11-12 (online) with Thomas Adnan-Smith and Ellie Craig each discussing their PhD research, as below:

Diving at the deep end - measuring deep povertyThomas Adnan-Smith

Since 2010, there has been a widely documented intensification of poverty in the UK. Whilst COVID-19 may have disrupted longer term trends, the poorest households have borne the brunt of the cost-of-living crisis. Dominant measures of poverty do not draw much needed attention to those facing the most severe degrees of hardship, and do not necessarily lend themselves to effective prioritisation in policymaking. ‘Deep poverty’ is a useful and increasingly popular heuristic for understanding the changing fortunes of the poorest but requires conceptual and methodological development. This presentation will offer an overview of my attempts to grapple with the development of a useful measure of ‘deep poverty’.

Child Sexual Abuse: Victims' and Survivors' Perspectives on the Processing of Abuse, Eleanor Craig

With Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) having long lasting negative impacts on the lives of many victims-survivors, it is important that we reflect on how best to support individuals after abuse has occurred. Currently, little attention is paid to the processes of victim-survivor recovery, with attention, instead, usually focussed on the experiences of accessing support services. However, with the most recent Independent Inquiry into CSA confirming that victims-survivors of abuse frequently experience a delay in receiving support, I explore the processes which have helped victims-survivors and also challenge the limitations of our perceptions, specifically, of epiphanies and turning points in our understanding of how abuse is processed by victims-survivors.
